NDHU Office of International Affairs Hosts All-English Gender Equality Lecture, Sparking Cross-Cultural Dialogue and Diverse Perspectives
National Dong Hwa University (NDHU) held an all-English gender equality lecture on May 13, 2025, titled “GENDER EQUALITY on CAMPUS: Culture Differences? Culture Shock?”, delivered by Professor Li-Juan Chung from the Department of Special Education. The event attracted students from Indonesia, India, Eswatini, Haiti, Mongolia, and Taiwan. The lively atmosphere reflected the participants’ strong interest and deep resonance with gender equality issues through cross-cultural exchange.
The lecture was conducted entirely in English. Professor Chung guided students to reflect on the definition and practice of gender equality across different cultural backgrounds, drawing from her observations in educational settings. She emphasized that although the concept of gender equality is globally shared, perceptions and expectations regarding gender roles, rights, and responsibilities often vary across cultures and social contexts, sometimes leading to misunderstandings or culture shock.
During the event, students actively shared their experiences of encountering differing gender norms in their cross-cultural learning and daily lives. Several students spoke about the conflicts they felt between traditional and modern values, while others noted how, upon arriving in Taiwan, they observed women having greater freedom to express themselves publicly. Some students reflected on how interactions with peers from diverse cultural backgrounds helped them rethink and better understand the multifaceted nature of gender equality. Others mentioned that gender issues had been sensitive topics in their home environments and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in such an open and free dialogue at NDHU.
Professor Chung stated that cross-cultural dialogues on gender equality not only help students appreciate both differences and commonalities among cultures but also contribute to building a more inclusive and diversity-respecting campus environment. She encouraged students to continue participating in gender equality activities, to express themselves boldly, and to listen to one another, so that the ideals of gender equality can be truly realized in daily life.
Organized by the Office of International Affairs, this lecture serves as a practical example of NDHU’s commitment to both campus internationalization and gender equality education. Moving forward, NDHU will continue to promote multilingual and diverse themed lectures and activities to foster cross-cultural understanding and a gender-friendly learning environment.
